13 Reasons Why NOT

13 reasons why

There is a very popular Netflix movie right now about a girl named Hannah Baker who recently took her own life.  Through a series of audio tapes, she relates her experiences that collectively caused her to commit suicide.

This is a very disturbing topic for teenagers.  Some argue that it opens up topics like bullying and It gives adults the venue and opportunity to talk to teenagers about the right way to handle situations like these.  So this movie is more of a “what not to do”  rather than a “what to do”.

In my opinion, this movie glamorizes and romanticizes suicide.  This April 2017,the National Association of School Psychologists released a statement that says ” Research shows that exposure to another person’s suicide or sensationalized accounts of death, can be one of the many risk factors that youths struggling with mental health condition cite as reason they contemplate suicide.”

An otherwise healthy teenager might watch this and come out like ” oh, deep” but for the other teenagers who are struggling, this kind of shows might be catalysts for something that will have a negative impact on them.

What with all the talk about this movie,  this is my two cents worth, because, A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do!
